Plan the last 12 weeks of thesis writing backwards from submission. This sample chart overlaps drafting with supervisor feedback, then reserves time for revisions, sign-off, proofreading and printing.
Ganttile publishes this sample thesis writing plan. It assumes the analysis is finished, the literature review and methods are drafted, and the results, discussion, introduction and conclusion still need writing.
Reserve time for printing, proofreading, sign-off and the supervisor's full-draft read first. The sample ends on Friday of week 12:
| Weeks | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 | List unfinished work and agree feedback dates. |
| 1 to 3 | Draft the results chapter. |
| 3 to 7 | Draft the discussion during results feedback, revise results, update literature and methods, then revise discussion. |
| 7 to 8 | Write the introduction and conclusion; send the full draft on Friday of week 8. |
| 8 to 10 | Format during the full-draft read, revise, then get sign-off on Friday of week 10. |
| 11 to 12 | Proofread for a week, print or prepare the final PDF, and submit on Friday of week 12. |
That leaves about seven weeks for writing. Compare the unfinished chapters with that time before agreeing the plan.
The sample allows ten days for each chapter and ten for the full draft. Ask your supervisor for their turnaround and absences in week one; reading competes with teaching, other students and travel.
Draft the discussion while the supervisor reads the results. Work on references, figures and formatting during the full-draft read.
Start with results, then discussion. Update the literature review and methods to match the work. Write the introduction and conclusion last, once the argument is clear.
Reduce drafting scope before cutting proofreading or the full-draft read. A results chapter that runs five days late pushes later work.
Cover three points: work completed, next week's work, and feedback or decisions needed from the supervisor. Use the chart to check whether submission still fits.
Use template copies the linked plan into a free account starting on the coming Monday. Leave Hide weekends off: the sample counts all seven days. Turn on Auto schedule under Settings and move the first bars until Thesis submitted reaches your deadline. Shorten work that no longer fits.
For a longer schedule, use the three-year PhD chart or a complete research schedule covering the literature review onwards.
Shorten the drafting bars and the literature review update first. Keep the full-draft read, the sign-off and at least a few days of proofreading, and ask your supervisor whether one chapter can be read faster than usual.
That is your call. The sample counts all seven days because many people write at weekends near the end. If you do not, turn on Hide weekends: the bars then count working days, the dates move later, and you should check the submission date again.
Yes, if the research is finished and the writing is what is left. If you are still collecting or analysing data, start from a plan that covers the research as well.
